Beggar's Bush Barracks 1922

Updated: Aug 23, 2021

This photo was taken during the transitional period leading to an Irish free state. Liam McCarthy’s grandfather was in the photo.

The Irish War of Independence was fought in 1919 and 1921 between the Irish Republican Army and the British Army, RIC and USC. A truce/ ultimation was offered by British government on 11 July 1921. Michael Collins negotiated and signed a treaty on 6th December 1921 reportedly under duress.

There was a symbolic march by the I.R.A. detachment through Dublin and occupied Beggar's Bush Barracks." This ended British rule in most of Ireland and the Irish Free State was created as a self-governing Dominion on 6 December 1922.

This period is only referred to in The Cause but it had an impact on the characters in the story as much as the Easter Rising 1916 and Bloody Sunday 1972.
